Best Local Food Markets and Street Eats to Try in Melaka – Explore the City Through Its Food

If you’re a foodie, you’re going to love visiting Melaka. From markets to night stalls, there’s so much variety. These are the best local food markets and street eats to try here.

    Popiah Ta Chong

By 11 AM the queue at this Popiah stall will be already long. The shop doesn’t have air conditioning, but several fans keep it cool and comfortable. It’s also clean and well-organised, with an effective system in place.

There are two lines – one for preorders and another for walk-in customers. Those who order in advance through WhatsApp can expect their food to be ready right on time, fresh and neatly packed.

The staff wear masks and gloves while preparing each roll, working quickly and cleanly. The Popiah skin is placed on a chopping board, layered in the centre, and filled with ingredients like lettuce, dried tofu, yam bean, egg, a mix of sweet and savoury sauce, and crispy pork cracklings.

Most customers order takeaway, and only a couple of tables are available for those who prefer to eat there. The Popiah itself has a lighter flavour compared to the crunchier versions found in Ipoh – the kind of difference that comes down to personal taste rather than one being better than the other.

    Tengkera Duck Noodle

Your next stop should be the duck noodle shop that reinforced how clean and well-kept eateries in Melaka tend to be. Like the Popiah stall earlier, this place focuses on a single dish – duck noodles. The cooking station sits right at the entrance, where the noodles are prepared fresh. It’s a family-run business now in its third generation, and this location has been open for about 15 years.

There’s no air conditioning, but there are fans. The atmosphere is simple and relaxed.

Each bowl comes with braised tofu, egg, shredded duck meat, and bean sprouts – nothing fancy, just good, balanced flavours. The soy-based broth is rich and slightly sweet, coating the noodles nicely, especially the Bee Hoon version.

What if you want to try a different dining experience? Pop into one of the elegant restaurants. If you’re a tourist, you’ll be happy to know that some of the best restaurants in Melaka are found at PARKROYAL A’Famosa Melaka Resort.

    Putu Piring Melaka

Another must-visit is Putu Piring Tengkera stall, famous for its traditional Malay dessert, putu piring. Putu piring is a soft rice flour cake filled with palm sugar (gula melaka) and served warm with grated coconut.

At the front of the shop, workers are busy preparing each batch by hand. The process is fascinating to watch. Rice flour batter is pressed into small moulds, called piring, then steamed until soft. Once ready, the cakes are removed and topped with shredded coconut before being packed and handed over to waiting customers.

The flavour is beautifully balanced – the rice cake itself is mild. The coconut adds a touch of sweetness and salt.

Ee Ji Ban Chicken Rice Ball

For lunch, visit Ee J Ban Chicken Rice Ball, a long-running eatery that’s less crowded than the famous Jonker Street eateries but just as satisfying. The restaurant is Halal and fully air-conditioned.

Orders are taken through iPads, which keeps things quick and organised while the staff stay busy chopping and plating chicken at the counter. The place has been around for about 25 years, and the owner recommends drizzling the chicken with their homemade soy-based sauce for extra flavour.

The chicken rice balls here are on par with those along Jonker Street, but the quieter atmosphere and better service make the experience more relaxed and enjoyable.

    Calanthe Art Cafe

Located right in the middle of Jonker Walk, you can’t miss Calanthe Art Café. Pots and pans hang on the walls, hundreds of Carnation milk cans cover the ceiling, and old vinyl records are mixed in for good measure. This place is full of character.

The menu contains Western dishes as well as local Nyonya flavours. The Pongteh Chicken comes braised with mushrooms and potatoes in a rich soy sauce, while the Nyonya Laksa is creamy with coconut milk, lightly spiced, and served with stuffed bean curd skin.

The food is good, but it’s really the setting that makes this café stand out – a laid-back place where the décor is as good as the food.

    Restoran Rong Mao

A famous dim sum place, Rong Mao is spotless. The lack of air conditioning isn’t a problem thanks to ceiling fans.

The owner manages the steaming station at the front, preparing fresh baskets of dim sum and helping serve customers when he can. The menu follows classic Hong Kong traditions, with one unique flair – a dim sum variation made with otak-otak.

The layout is spacious, so you won’t feel cramped. Everything on the menu is quite good, with the standout being the Hong Kong–style char siu bao – soft buns with a golden top that cracks open to reveal the rich barbecue pork filling inside.
